Fiction: Nightshade Review

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Word to the Wise: This book is about former military special ops that have left for their own reasons (insert discarded heroes name) so the story is intense, high impact, and a lot of action. It is not graphic by any means but the side story of the missionaries is deep and very real.
What's the Skinny:
I should preface this first that I only started reading military fiction recently. I tend to be a bit more tentative when approaching books that lean into the military because I am affected deeply by their stories. However, Ronie Kendig has been a household name and her stories have moved me on a much deeper level and while this story left me teary eyed, it also left me excited to start book 2.

Nightshade is about former Navy SEAL Max and his estranged wife Sydney. Max has anger issues that have caused serious problems, but he also has demons that he needs to work out. He has seen and done things in war that he feels cannot be forgiven or understood. All, his separated wife Sydney wants his the man she married back, but she knows Max's anger is out of control and he isn't letting her in to help understand why he is so angry, so she immerses herself in her job as a journalist.

There is a weaving and element of mystery behind the mystery group soldiers that Sydney is hunting down for a human interest article and Max's new job. On the side, we as readers following the gripping tale of a missionary family and their struggle and persecution from the people that they went to minister to. These stories are deep and their emotions are raw and real, and because of that I found there were times I needed to stop reading for the day because it was moving in me in a way that normal fiction (dare I say even normal Christian fiction) is even written these days.

Side note: This is Christian fiction but ALSO don't let that deter you from reading this story because this is not your mama's Christian fiction story.

Also, can we marvel over this cover. Like wow.

So yes, this book is a solid 5 in my mind and I am already wondering when I am going to do a re-read of it.

Lastly,  GO ARMY Hooah!
