Non-Fiction: 12 Ways Your Phone is Changing You Review

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Word to the Wise: Reinke is a Christian author and loves his J. Pipes (John Piper) references. This isn't problematic unless you aren't a J.Pipes fan.
What's the Skinny:

Author Tony Reinke delves into a very hot topic: How our phones are changing us. He maps out 12 different ways or topics that we are experiencing in this highly technological driven world. He tackles issues of the heart as well as how the culture is changing. Overall, this is an extremely practical book and there was quite a bit of truths I was able to glean from it.

Downside: Reinke seems a bit "old school" to me and not in a good way. There were times where I felt like he was old fashioned (in the literary section he mentions using a physical copy of a book over an e-reader, something I think is preference and a matter of opinion rather than an attentive issue). There were other times that I felt like Reinke could be a "millenial basher" (a really big pet peeve of mine) and failed to bring forth the redemptive qualities outlined in each topic or way the phone is changing us.

Of course, not all of Reinke's points are opinion as he uses scientific studies and scripture to back up his commentary. This book is a great read if you are feeling trapped in a technologically driven world and not quite sure how to address how we tackle as Christians living in a world that seems to be stuck with their noses in their phone.

If You Read the Back of Books:

"Do You Control Your Phone—Or Does Your Phone Control You?
Within a few years of its unveiling, the smartphone had become part of us, fully integrated into the daily patterns of our lives. Never offline, always within reach, we now wield in our hands a magic wand of technological power we have only begun to grasp. But it raises new enigmas, too. Never more connected, we seem to be growing more distant. Never more efficient, we have never been more distracted.
Drawing from the insights of numerous thinkers, published studies, and his own research, writer Tony Reinke identifies twelve potent ways our smartphones have changed us—for good and bad. Reinke calls us to cultivate wise thinking and healthy habits in the digital age, encouraging us to maximize the many blessings, to avoid the various pitfalls, and to wisely wield the most powerful gadget of human connection ever unleashed."
