Book Review: Geekerella

Rating: 5/5

Word to the Wise: Some language. Otherwise, a pretty clean novel. Also, I listened to this book via audio.

What's the Skinny: Where do I begin? This was AMAZING! My nerdy side is so giddy right now with all the Star Trek references and then my fairy tale side was squealing. Yes. This is very real Cinderella retelling.

Elle Wittimer is a senior in high school living with her Vogue social climbing stepmom and two snobby stepsisters. When shes not being bullied around by her family, she is working at the food truck the Magic Pumpkin. In her down time she is encapsulated with the TV series Starfield which is now getting a reboot movie. When Elle sees a cosplay competition at the Excelsicon to get tickets to the premiere in L.A., Elle knows she has to win.

So, I have always had the dream of doing cosplay and going to San Diego Comic Con. This novel draws in all the nerdy parts of me. Elle is absolutely obsessed with Starfield that can make any Trekky Jedi say, "solidarity". You definitely can understand Elle's frustration, and the character actually grows in the novel. Yes, this plot is basically Cinderella, but the very best of all Cinderella retellings. Picture Ever After  and Cinderella Story with Hilary Duff with a mix of sci-fi and the modern age.

Then cue Darien Freeman, the hot teen star who is now slated to play the main role Carmindor. When a scathing blog post is published about him just being a pretty face, doubt starts to rise that he can actually live up to the Starfield fans expectations of Carmindor.

Nothing seemed forced in the actual plot progression. Since I listened to the novel via audio, I have to give props to the two readers because they really brought to life the characters. I was even annoyed with the step-mom and her slow Southern drawl.

Ashley Poston did a brilliant job crafting a very likable story from a lovable tale down to the sparkly glass slippers and magical dress, with the most unlikely fairy godmother.

In Case You Read the Back of BooksGeek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad s old costume), Elle s determined to win unless her stepsisters get there first. Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons before he was famous. Now they re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he s ever wanted, but Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. But when she disappears at midnight, will he ever be able to find her again? Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom.
